Pandemia! Odiolândia

Pandemia! Odiolândia

Odiolândia is a project based on comments posted on social networks about three recent events that mobilized Brazil: the raid on Cracolândia (May 21, 2017), the murder of city councilor Marielle Franco (March 14, 2018), and the fire at the Wilton Paes de Almeida building in Largo Paissandu (May 1, 2018).

Symptoms of the conflicts and social problems of contemporary Brazil, they draw attention to the weakness of public-health policies, prejudice based on race, sexuality, and class, and the gravity of the housing situation in major cities.

Widely reported, these events took over the internet and became veritable verbal battles, dominated by a rotating machine gun firing aggression and resentment of every kind. Blaming the victims and wishing the same tragic fates on other minorities, such as migrants from the Northeast, gay people, and landless people, are recurrent. Demands for unrestricted gun carrying, the death penalty, and military intervention repeat like a mantra capable of solving everything.

The cordel booklet bringing together the texts from this journey “into horror,” preceded by a brief introduction of mine, proudly forms part of the Pandemia series published by n-1 edições. The launch—the first one…—takes place on August 28 at Casa do Povo, at 8 p.m. There will be a debate, a film, and plenty more that night.https://www.facebook.com/events/721448058196192/
