Coronavida: pandemia, cidade e cultura urbana examines the impact of the coronavirus on culture and everyday urban life. The suppression of public space, new forms of activism, the pandemic of images—from livestreams to memes—the molecular surveillance of the new normal, increasingly precarious social relations and remote work are among its themes.
The book takes its title from a series, Coronavida, that the author wrote for seLecT magazine between March and April of this year. The series developed into contributions for Piauí, Folha de S. Paulo, Rádio USP and n-1 edições. It also developed into videos and lectures, including one at the opening of the Culture and Contemporary Reality Seminar, coordinated by Guilherme Wisnik. Starting with this publication, he also began co-directing the Outras Palavras series with architect and editor Fabio Valentim at Escola da Cidade.
Coronavida as a book
At the school’s invitation, this material was assembled and edited into a book. Written during quarantine, Coronavida serves both as a record of the period and an agenda for reflection. In dialogue with authors such as Deleuze, Latour and Jonathan Crary, and interwoven with pop-culture references such as The Dark Knight and interventions by the Projetemoscollective, Giselle Beiguelman scans a life walled in by screens to consider how the coronavirus affects our understanding of the city.
The book Coronavida: pandemia, cidade e cultura urbana, which will also be published in print, is available as a free download from the publisher’s website beginning August 24.
