Information Curation

Among the many terms and roles born with Web 2.0, information curator deserves attention. This discussion, virtually—if not entirely—absent from media art, where debates about online curation were concentrated until recently, is beginning to appear regularly on marketing blogs specializing in social media. Like almost everything published in that field, it comes with bombastic phrases, recipes for success and tips about unmissable tools and apps to make your curation take off.

Despite the futility of this approach, the subject is strategically important for thinking about new ways of producing and distributing knowledge within a network culture oriented toward distributed intelligence. In this conversation at “Encontros com o Futuro,” organized by Commais at ECA-USP, I propose starting from themes that have guided the debate on curating art on the internet:

  • The curator as filter
  • The curator as agent
  • The platform as curatorial device

These themes are neither models nor normative standards. But they can point toward understanding information curation as a critical activity that goes well beyond counting likes and the ability to generate and serve an audience.

The meeting, conversation, debate, lecture took place on Tuesday the 21st, at 7:30 p.m., at ECA-USP.
