Herkenhoff even quotes Mário de Andrade, for example, to recall São Paulo residents’ limited engagement in the struggle to abolish slavery—the ultimate root of the prejudice that persists in the city, reflected in Giselle Beiguelman’s installation “Odiolândia.”
Made up of actual social-media comments attacking northeastern Brazilians, gay people or Muslims, the work mirrors the climate of outright social warfare in the city.
