CINEMA PARADO

Cinema Parado presents fragmented images of diverse landscapes, pursuing the ambivalences of a nomadic gaze that captures everything through a mobile phone camera, blurring the moment of enjoyment with the anxiety to record it. It transforms photography into video, returning it as a perpetual motion of stills that occupy the screen and turn it into an infinite surface, where space merges with the very nature of time.

Presented as an installation in the exhibition Periscópio at Zipper Galeria

PERISCÓPIO

This Saturday, July 9, Zipper Galeria opens the group exhibition “Periscópio,” in which 26 artists of different nationalities present works exploring new media and their tangents from various perspectives and interests. The title refers to the optical instrument that enables us to see beyond our field of vision. Similarly, the works selected by artist and curator Fernando Velazquez invite reflection on how the emergence of new technologies and their developments can generate ways of thinking beyond traditional ones.

Whether through sensory perception, the construction of knowledge, or transformed social relationships, these new techniques also expand the field of visual arts. Art history shows that changes brought by time—in painting, photography, or cinema, for example—should be seen as part of a broader process, rather than as a break. Every new medium takes shape as an imprint of one or more earlier media, slowly gaining technical and discursive autonomy. The body of works and processes presented in “Periscópio” starts from the premise that we are going through one of these periods of transition stimulated by digital technologies.

Participating artists

Anaisa Franco, Andy Lomas, Andrei Thomaz, Astrovandalistas, Bruno Vianna, Gabriel Menotti, Giselle Beiguelman, Guto Nóbrega, Fábia Karklin, Felipe Julian, Flora Leite and Maura Grimaldi, Henrique Roscoe, Herbert Baioco, Jaime Lobato, Julio Parente, Leandro Mendes (Vigas), Lucas Bambozzi, Marcio H Mota, Matheus Leston, Mike Pelletier, Nurit Bar-Shai, Ricardo Carioba, Richard Garet, Roberta Carvalho, and Simon Fernandes.

About the curator

Fernando Velázquez is a transdisciplinary artist. His works include videos, installations and interactive objects, audiovisual performances, and images generated through algorithms. His research explores the relationship between Nature and Culture, bringing two main subjects into dialogue: the perceptual capacities of the human body and the mediation of reality by technical devices.
