Interfaces for the January 8 video archive

Interfaces for the January 8 video archive

We developed an interface for accessing 500 hours of video from 8 January at the Palácio do Planalto. The footage comes from 33 surveillance cameras and was released by the GSI by order of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court. The programming was developed by researcher Thiago Hersan, a TT4A fellow on our Thematic Project. All code is open source and available on our GitHub. The development and training of our AI models are discussed in this post.

The interface offers:

Browse by time

Browse all videos from a given time to gain an overview of the movements of those involved in the attempted coup throughout the palace on January 8. Click any image to watch the corresponding video.

Browse by location

Explore the different spaces recorded by the palace cameras to understand how they were occupied during the invasion throughout the day. Click any image to watch the corresponding video.

Browse by object

Browse architectural elements, such as windows and columns, and features that stood out in our analyses, such as the use of national flags and fire extinguishers by the participants in the attempted coup. The aim is to extend these image-based search resources to other collections, enabling faster and more complex research in architecture and design.
