masp.etc.br grew out of a workshop held on 6 and 7 May 2017 as part of the exhibition Avenida Paulista. It culminated in a projection on May 11 in MASP’s open space, understood here as a symbolic site of confrontations and encounters in our recent history that extends far beyond the museum.
We began with a broad survey of aesthetic production on Avenida Paulista, gathering audio and video records of performers, street vendors, craftspeople, protesters, monuments, homeless people, surveillance cameras and more.
During the workshop, we captured and indexed the images that fed the projection on May 11.

A cinema by everyone, with everyone, for everyone
We propose a collective, polyphonic creation with multiple authors. An occupation of the open space, with images projected onto the ceiling, placing everyone wandering through it on equal ground. A cinema by everyone, with everyone, for everyone.
In confronting the city and informational territories, we ask: what narratives can be built through directed mapping and hashtag filtering?
The workshop
Over three meetings, we worked on building a database of photographic and audiovisual documents of Avenida Paulista.
By mapping everyday aesthetic manifestations, we sought to discuss contemporary digital image production, considering appropriation and editing, categorization and tagging, taxonomy, flow and circulation in the current context of artistic creation.
The first day was dedicated to walking along the avenue to make photographic and audiovisual records. On the second day, we began categorizing and editing the collected material. At the third meeting, on Thursday, May 11, the results were displayed in a projection on the ceiling of MASP’s open space.
The image database was started and opened to contributions. To participate, add #MASPETCBR to records of Avenida Paulista on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

The acronym MASP
An acronym is an abbreviation formed from parts of other words that can be pronounced as a word. In digital culture, acronyms are used to create words that do not yet exist. Here, MASP is a museum-world of Avenida Paulista and everything the avenue encompasses beyond its geographical boundaries.
This is Masp.Etc.Br! The wordplay below is preserved in Portuguese.
