I participated in the 37th Panorama of Brazilian Art at MAM-SP with the work Meio monumento.
Meio monumento is a device for activating debate about monuments and the challenges of decolonizing public spaces in São Paulo and other Brazilian cities. The project begins with one of Brazil’s most controversial monuments, honoring the bandeirante Borba Gato.
Meio monumento at MAM-SP
The monument is presented lying down, cut in half and at half its original size, forming a square for debate where the public is invited to appropriate the statue with their bodies and thereby propose other ways of challenging memory policies.
Meio monumento hosts a series of meetings with activists and experts who discuss, from different perspectives, alternatives and conditions for de-monumentalizing heritage and its uncomfortable monuments.
