Monumento Nenhum, at Beco do Pinto, and Chacina da Luz, at Solar da Marquesa de Santos, discuss the loss of memory in public space and the city’s relationship with its historical and cultural heritage. Composed of fragments of monuments, the installations reproduce the pieces’ condition exactly as found in storage facilities of the Department of Historical Heritage, as a kind of ready-made of forgetting.
Together, the two installations, Monumento Nenhum and Chacina da Luz, invert art’s place in public policies of memory. Instead of being their object, art here thinks through these policies, suggesting a debate about the social production of the aesthetics of memory and forgetting in public space.
