Seven Pieces of Advice for a Young Designer

The second issue of Tecnologias Cognitivas is devoted to Digital Design and Networks. The issue is edited by Lucia Leão, who interviewed me about my professional path, concepts and suggestions for research in the field. The most entertaining—and difficult—question was the last:

If you could offer seven pieces of advice to a young digital designer, what would they be?

My answer follows. The full interview is available here:

1. Open the code and share it.
2. Respect and promote distributed intelligence: we live in the age of “produsers.”
3. Think about information architecture BEFORE any other stage.
4. Design is an exercise in generosity: pay attention to the coherence between the programming language, the product’s message and the project’s intended audience.
5. Forget originality. Remix and multiply.
6. Be bold. Challenge usability rules to create new sensibilities.
7. Be obsessive. Never give up. Persist.

The journal is published by the graduate program in Technologies of Intelligence and Digital Design at PUC-SP, conceived and coordinated by Lucia Santaella.
